New York Aquarium

Restored to its pre-Sandy glory, the New York Aquarium is the home to awe-inspiring exhibits, thriving marine wildlife, and is the centerpiece of the Coney Island community.

The New York Aquarium, located on Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York, experienced significant damage to its buildings, exhibits, and critical life support systems during Superstorm Sandy in 2012. To restore one of the world’s largest urban wildlife parks, the Wildlife Conservation Society enlisted the expertise of SBI Consultants, who provided technical solutions and cost assessments for the restoration effort.

The restoration project aimed to return the New York Aquarium to its pre-storm condition and implement a comprehensive flood mitigation strategy in collaboration with FEMA. The project included the installation of a backup generator and various physical upgrades to reinforce the multiple structures that make up the Aquarium campus. Enhancements included the addition of a pedestrian-friendly perimeter site wall and fence, water-resistant metal doors, panelized covers, flood log barriers, flood guards, waterproofing devices, and backflow prevention systems.

Given the unique nature of the project, SBI Consultants utilized its expertise in construction involving specialty systems that cater to the life safety of animals with diverse needs and climatic conditions. SBI proactively assessed the project’s scope, schedule, and cost, while supporting the New York Aquarium in overcoming funding challenges.

Today, the New York Aquarium is being restored to its pre-Sandy condition and is equipped to withstand future storms. With its captivating exhibits and vibrant marine life, the Aquarium continues to be a remarkable and cherished feature of the Coney Island community.
