Schwarzman Animal Medical Center (AMC), the largest non-profit animal hospital in the world, is undergoing a transformational expansion and modernization project to continue its legacy of veterinary excellence.

Located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the 10-story, 60-year old facility is undergoing reconstruction of more than 26,000 square feet of existing clinical and client space and expansion of more than 11,000 square feet. The new construction includes four additional operating rooms that will triple the hospital’s trauma center capacity, a doubling of the scope of the intensive care unit facilities, an expansion of the neurology center from 100 to 460 square feet, a primary care suite spanning 1,100 square feet, and a special care unit with a dog run on the third floor. There will also be a new recovery and minor procedure room, an ophthalmology suite, and more conference space for postgraduate veterinary training within the fourth and fifth floors’ 5,500-square foot expansion.

For this dramatic renovation, SBI Consultants provided cost assessment and scheduling services that began midstream of construction and continued through construction and closeout.  SBI’s cost engineers are involved in a range of tasks, including the review of design impacts and change orders for accuracy of quantities, rates, unit prices and general compliance with the contract, and any constructability and value engineering opportunities. Throughout the entire arc of the project, SBI is providing consistent and reliable technical and management expertise, serving as an objective sounding board to the team, by anticipating problems and offering guidance to successfully manage outcomes.

These improvements will enable the iconic New York City institution to meet the increased demand for patient care, enhance its veterinary education program, and pioneer new discoveries that will propel animal and human medicine.
