Masdar Institute of Science and Technology Ph. 1
This carbon-neutral campus of the future showcases the latest efficient systems and strategies in sustainable construction.
The Masdar Institute of Science and Technology is a sustainably-focused graduate institute of the Khalifa University of Science and Technology in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, UAE. Powered entirely by renewable solar energy, the carbon-neutral campus reflects MIST’s mission to pioneer technologies and perspectives for the advancement of worldwide sustainability.
SBI Consultants guided the fit-out portion of the ambitious creation of the innovative MIST campus, designed with passive cooling techniques and low-energy solutions. Built on a 7.62 m platform above the desert floor to provide optimum shade and reduce cooling loads, the 150,000 sq. meter campus consists of state-of-the-art research facilities, high-tech equipment, student residences, social spaces and landscaped areas.
Over two phases of construction, SBI provided essential project management services that assessed and controlled the project’s scope, costs and schedule. Working in close coordination with the project team, SBI engineers addressed the myriad of challenges involved in building a campus independent of a power grid and adopting the latest sustainable materials and methods in concrete construction.
Phase 1A of the MIST campus was opened in 2007 with four residential blocks comprising of 102 apartments, two laboratory buildings and other amenities. Phase 1B, opened in 2011, added another three residential blocks and 221 apartments, three laboratory buildings, a sports facility, a 90-seat multipurpose hall for cultural, sports and musical events, 13 high-bay laboratories and two cleanrooms, and an open-air swimming pool.
SBI was proud to contribute technical solutions that maximized efficiency and reduce costs to create the futuristic MIST campus, an ideal setting to accelerate the pace of innovation in sustainability.
