Pier 57

SBI’s planning is helping to transform the iconic Pier 57 into a mixed-use development and a beautifully refurbished piece of New York City history

Set on the waterfront of Manhattan’s vibrant Hudson River Park, Pier 57 is being transformed into a new mixed-use development with retail, offices and open spaces for dining, entertainment and recreation. Originally constructed in 1952, the iconic pier is held aloft by three colossal floating concrete caissons resting on thousands of piles driven into the floor of the Hudson, an engineering marvel that deemed this building a place on the National Register of Historic Places.

SBI Consultants was retained to oversee the restoration and redesign of Pier 57, which involves modernization and improvements to existing systems and the core and shell elements of the 450,000+ GSF enclosed space, readying the space for interior tenants, renovations to the pier’s rooftop, structural strengthening of the marine support components, and installation of new MEP and vertical transportation systems.

Once completed, the new Pier 57 will have 350,000 sf of office space, 40,000 sf of retail space including a public market, and a 2.5-acre rooftop park with restaurants, an open amphitheater, and an additional 75,000 sf of green terraces.

A feat of planning, SBI successfully navigated the restoration challenges inherent in Pier 57’s multipurpose programming, construction on floating concrete caissons, and location along the busy West Side Highway. As a result of SBI’s strategic project oversight, Pier 57 will become a favored destination for tourists and locals to enjoy a beautifully refurbished piece of New York City history.
